Learning English

What do the CEFR levels A1 to C2 mean?

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) describes language ability on six levels: A1 and A2 (beginner), B1 and B2 (intermediate), and C1 and C2 (advanced). Learning materials tagged by CEFR level make it easier to pick content that is challenging but still understandable.

How can I find out my English level?

You can take a free online placement test or compare yourself with the CEFR "can-do" descriptions for reading, listening, speaking and writing. Our guide How to find your CEFR English level walks through both options.

What is the best way to improve English listening?

Listen a little every day to material at or just above your level, and read along with the text when you can. Reading while listening helps you connect how words are written with how they sound. See why reading while listening builds fluency.

How much time should I spend learning English each day?

Consistency matters more than long sessions. Even 15–30 minutes of focused reading or listening every day adds up faster than one long session a week. Our article on building a daily English learning habit has practical tips.

How can I learn new English vocabulary and remember it?

Meet new words in context, for example in stories and audiobooks, and review them several times over the following days. Spaced repetition, reviewing a word just before you would forget it, is one of the most reliable ways to make words stick. Read more about spaced repetition for vocabulary.

Is reading stories a good way to learn English?

Yes. Stories give you lots of language in a meaningful context, which helps with vocabulary, grammar and reading speed at the same time, and they keep you motivated. The key is choosing stories at the right level. See how to learn English through stories.

Where can I learn English grammar for free?

Our free English grammar guide covers every core topic, from nouns and tenses to conditionals and reported speech. Each lesson explains the rule and shows it in real examples.

Can children learn English with stories and audiobooks?

Yes. Picture books, comics, fairy tales and short audiobooks are a natural way for kids to hear and read English. A short bedtime story routine is an easy place to start, see our bedtime story tips.

Our apps

Which apps does Dobi Apps make?

We currently make two English learning apps: Audiobook — English Audiobooks, with audiobooks and ebooks graded by CEFR level from A1 to C2, and Learn English With Stories, a library of over 1,000,000 books, comics, audiobooks and games.

Are the apps free?

Both apps are free to download on the App Store and Google Play, and their core library works without a subscription. Learn English With Stories gives you all of its books and features for free.

Which devices are supported?

Our apps are available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store and for Android phones and tablets on Google Play.

What is the difference between Audiobook and Learn English With Stories?

Audiobook focuses on leveled listening: every title is graded from A1 to C2 and narrated, with a synced transcript you can read along with. Learn English With Stories is a much larger library of books, comics, audiobooks and games for reading widely and for fun.

Can I use the apps offline?

Yes. Both apps let you download books, audiobooks and transcripts to your device, so you can read and listen without an internet connection.

Can I look up and translate words while I read?

Yes. Tap a word to see its meaning, pronunciation and translation. Both apps support more than 100 languages for the interface and translations, and Audiobook can also translate whole sentences or paragraphs.
