Where the name Madison comes from
Madison is an English surname that meant “son of Maud”, Maud being a medieval form of Matilda. It was rare as a girls’ name until the 1984 film Splash, in which a mermaid names herself after Madison Avenue in New York. It then became one of the most popular girls’ names in the US.
