It's all Greek to me

Said when something is impossible for you to understand.

Examples

  • My brother tried to explain his coding project, but it's all Greek to me.
  • I read the tax form three times and it was all Greek to me.

How to use it

Informal. Used about any language, subject or text, not only Greek.

Where it comes from

Shakespeare used it in Julius Caesar (1599). It probably echoes a medieval Latin phrase that scribes wrote when they could not read Greek.
