Steal someone's thunder

To take attention or praise away from someone, often by doing what they planned first.

Examples

  • She didn't want to steal his thunder, so she waited until after his speech.

How to use it

Where it comes from

Usually traced to the English playwright John Dennis, who invented a stage effect for thunder in the early 1700s and complained when another theatre used it.
